About the Ritual
Moksha Narayana Bali is observed where a death was sudden or unnatural, or where the customary last rites could not be performed at the time -- a death away from home, a body never recovered, or rites left undone for reasons the family could not control. It is also the rite families are directed to when an astrologer has identified Pitru Dosha. The order of service at Gokarna, as our purohits perform it: 1. SANKALPAM The rite is established, and your family gotra and the name of the deceased are stated aloud. Nothing proceeds until these are right, which is why we collect them carefully at booking and read them back to you. 2. GANAPATI POOJA 3. PRETA AVAHANA The departed is invoked by name. 4. KALASTHAPANA AND POOJA 5. BHASMA, GOMAYA AND MRITTIKA SNANA The ritual bathing with ash, cow dung and earth. 6. JAPA PARAYANA AND HOMA Conducted by three brahmins. 7. NARAYANA BALI HAVANA The central offering, made to Narayana on behalf of the departed. 8. PRAYASHCHITTA TILA HAVANA The sesame offering made in atonement for rites left undone. 9. RUDRA HAVANA 10. BRAHMANA DANA AND ASHIRVACHANA The offering to the officiating brahmins, and the blessing that closes the rite. 11. PINDAPRADANAM AND TILA TARPANA The pindas are offered and water mixed with black sesame is given. Taken over two days, the first day carries the japa parayana and the Narayana Bali havana, and the second adds Tripindi Shraddha and Tila Homa.

Questions families ask
Will we be asked for more money once we arrive?
Not by us, and not by the purohits we send you to. Samagri, purohits, dakshina, and the room and meals for two are all inside the package price shown here. The only thing charged on top is a room for guests beyond the two the package covers -- Rs 2,500 per two people per night non-AC, Rs 5,000 AC -- and we print that in advance rather than mention it on the day.
Do we have to travel to Gokarna ourselves?
No. The rite can be performed on your family's behalf, and the price on this page is that version. We take your gotra, the name of the deceased and the sankalpa details, and send photographs and video afterwards. Attending in person adds Rs 2,300, which is your accommodation and meals for two.
How is this different from pind daan?
Pind daan is the offering owed to ancestors generally, and it is repeated. Narayana Bali addresses one specific death where the customary last rites could not be performed at all. Families often perform both, but they are not substitutes for one another.
What is the Samuhika package?
The same rite, performed on the same day alongside other families rather than for yours alone. Your sankalpa is still taken on your own gotra and your own ancestors' names. It is the least expensive way to have the observance performed properly, and it does not include accommodation.
Do we need the second day?
The second day is Tripindi Shraddha and Tila Homa, which is the rite for ancestral offerings missed three years running. If your family has kept up its annual shraddha, you probably do not need it. Tell us your situation and we will say so rather than add it.
Can the rite follow our own tradition?
Yes. Tell us at booking whether your family is Smartha, Madhva, Sri Vaishnava or Iyengar and the paddhati is observed accordingly.
