About the Ritual
Pind daan at Gokarna is performed at Koti Tirtha, the tank beside the Mahabaleshwara temple where the Atmalinga stands. The rite follows the sequence families will recognise: 1. SANKALPA The purohit establishes the rite and states aloud your family gotra and the names of the ancestors it is offered for. Nothing proceeds until these are right. 2. PINDA PRADAN Rice flour is bound with ghee, honey, sugar, milk and curd, formed into pindas, and offered to the named ancestors. 3. TARPANA Water mixed with black sesame is offered. Included from the Standard package upward. 4. VISARJAN The pindas are immersed at Koti Tirtha. 5. BRAHMANA BHOJANA A meal is offered to the officiating brahmins, closing the observance. Included from the Premium package upward. The rite takes between forty-five minutes and three hours depending on the package. The detailed paddhati as our Gokarna purohits observe it will be published here once it is recorded in their own words. We would rather leave this section short than fill it with a generic sequence borrowed from somewhere else.

Questions families ask
Is accommodation included, like the other Gokarna rites?
No. Narayana Bali, Sarpa Samskara and Ashlesha Bali all include a room and meals for two; pind daan does not. It is a much shorter rite -- under three hours even at the highest tier -- and pricing a night's stay into it would be charging most families for something they do not use.
Where exactly is the rite performed?
At Koti Tirtha, the sacred tank beside the Mahabaleshwara temple in Gokarna, where the Atmalinga stands.
Do we have to travel to Gokarna ourselves?
No. The rite can be performed on your family's behalf for Rs 2,500 more. We take your gotra, the ancestors' names and the sankalpa details, and send photographs and video of the ceremony afterwards.
Should we go to Gaya instead?
Gaya is the older and more widely known place for pind daan, and we perform it there too. Gokarna is about 480 km from Bangalore and reachable by road, where Gaya is a flight and the better part of two days. If being present matters to your family, that difference is usually the deciding one.
Will we be asked for more money at the tirtha?
Not by us, and not by the purohits we send you to. Samagri, purohit and dakshina are all inside the package price. If anyone asks your family for more on the day, tell us and we will deal with it.
